Rabbi Akiva ben Yosef
Rabbi Akiva became active in the Yavneh (Jabneh) community sometime after the destruction of the Temple and Jerusalem in the year 70 CE and died in the Bar Kochba revolt of 132 – 136 CE. He grew up outside of the rabbinic community; joining it as a mature adult. He was a student of Rabbi Eliezer ben Hyrcanus and Rabbi Yehoshua ben Hananiah. Rabbi Akiva is a central figure in the texts found on this site. In texts highlighting Rabbi Yehoshua and Eliezer, he appears as a prospective leader eager to be where the action is.
