LIFELONG LEARNING NIGHTS AT AGUDAS ACHIM
7:00-8:00 pm
HEBREW READING 101 - taught by Rabbi Melissa Crespy
Have you always wanted to learn Hebrew, but never had the time? Are you frustrated because you’d like to participate more during services, but your Hebrew reading is not up-to-snuff? Are you considering conversion to Judaism and want to learn some of Judaism’s most basic prayers? If any of the above apply to you, then this is the class for you! We’ll be learning the Alef-Bet (Hebrew for Alphabet) using a method designed for adults. Every two to three pages, we’ll be learning another word or two! Using Rabbi Noah Golinkin’s classic book Shalom Aleichem, we will learn all the letters, and many, many words in the Siddur, the Jewish prayerbook. We will learn important Hebrew prayers like Shema, Aleinu, Kiddush and more.
Come join us! It’s never too late to learn! This class combines nicely with Introduction to Jewish Life, listed below.
8:00 pm
INTRODUCTION TO JEWISH LIFE - taught by Rabbi Melissa Crespy
Have your Hebrew School memories faded away? Are you a Jew who knows tons about your field but very little about Judaism? Do you want to learn, on an adult level, the richness that Judaism holds? Are you a parent who wants to learn about Judaism more in depth to be able to pass it on to your children? Are you considering conversion to Judaism and want to learn about what our rich tradition has to teach us? Would you like to celebrate an adult bar or bat-mitzvah? Then this 24-session, in-depth, meaty introduction to Jewish Life is for you! We will cover Judaism from soup to nuts – prayer, God, lifecycle events, ethics, Shabbat, Israel, holidays, history and more.
Everyone who takes this course is guaranteed to come out brimming with knowledge about Judaism, and a desire to know and do more! We will be reading from a number of terrific books which the synagogue can order for you.
The class will take place from 8:00 pm to 9:30 pm, starting on October 12 and ending in early June. It will serve as the first year of a two- year adult bar/bat mitzvah class. Join us! The riches of Judaism are waiting for you!
ZOLL ZEIN ZING - led by Ed Frankel
Seasoned musicians and rank amateurs, lets all join together for a weekly kumsitz. Bring your guitar, bongos or other instruments and join in an hour of pure musical pleasure as we sing songs from Israel, the siddur and Jewish tradition.
DEMYSTIFYING DAVENEN - taught by Leah Weintraub
This course is designed to bring meaning to the (general) prayer service. If you want to learn when, how, and why (or why not) to sit, stand and shuckle; if you want to learn why and when different prayers were added to the service; if you want to become more comfortable in any prayer service… This course is for you.
Course will finish at end of May.
All classes begin on October 12 (Columbus Day) and will conclude at end of school year unless otherwise noted.
