March 2021

Dear Congregant,

Why does the Brotherhood of Agudas Achim send you a Yellow Candle every year?

The Yellow Candle™ Campaign was created in 1981 to keep alive the memory of the Six Million Jews who perished in the Holocaust, or “Shoah”.  Entirely half of the world’s population of Jews was lost.  These Yellow Candles are modeled after traditional Yahrzeit candles that burn for 24 hours during periods of mourning and on the Yahrzeit anniversary of a family member.  The candle’s yellow wax serves to remind us of the yellow arm band which Jews were forced to wear during the Nazi regime.

This year, Holocaust Remembrance Day, or “Yom HaShoah”, begins on Wednesday evening April 7th, corresponding to 26 Nisan.  Please plan to light the Yellow Candle we have provided to you in this box on that evening.  Instructions and recommended meditations are provided on the back of this letter.

If you are able, I encourage you to please make a donation using the form on the back of this letter.  100% of your donation will benefit Holocaust survivors in need right here in the Central Ohio community, thanks to the generous sponsorship of Jonathan Silberstein, in memory of Abe Weinrib and Morrie Weinrib.  To learn more about the Holocaust Survivors Initiative, go to JewishColumbus.org/HIS.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at Brotherhood@agudasachim.org.

B’shalom,

Russ Abrams, President
